Property worth millions was destroyed on Tuesday morning at Toi Market in Kibera slums, Nairobi after a fire outrage. The fire that completely wrecked the market stalls started about 2am and lasted for about 3 hours. The cause of the fire is yet to be known.

At 6:40am, no help from Kenya Red Cross, Fire Brigade, General Service Unit or any other relevant authority had arrived at the scene. According to witness, Bernice Wasike, who is a trader at the market, the fire began at one of the stores and in no time it had spread to the others. “We did not salvage anything. Our goods were burned. Personally, I have lost Sh 200,000 worth of stock in shoes and other wares I was planning to sell this morning,” she said.

The Nairobi county government has promised to launch investigations about the tragedy and help ascertain the extent of the damage.

In the recent past there has been misunderstandings of land ownership between land grabbers and traders have been the root course of the perennial fires happening in the market

This is the second incident within four years where fire has brought down the market. The most recent one was in 2014.
