Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u faced questioning from the Finance Parliamentary Committee regarding the delayed release of funds allocated for the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF). Ndung’u explained that the government is grappling with a cash shortage, hindered by a shortfall in revenue collection and challenges in meeting financial obligations, including salary payments. He assured legislators that the government is working diligently to resolve the situation and release NG-CDF funds once sufficient resources become available.

The Treasury Secretary highlighted unprecedented challenges faced by the Kenya Kwanza administration, including a global economic downturn contributing to inflation. Ndung’u emphasized that these factors led to increased debt, necessitating structural measures to stabilize Kenya’s economy. In addressing the financial gap, he proposed lowering government expenditure or seeking external resources, indicating efforts by the president to engage with international partners. The delay in NG-CDF disbursement has sparked concerns among Members of Parliament, leading to a walk-out and calls for immediate fund release amid broader financial irregularities revealed by the Controller of Budget.
