The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has collected Ksh. 3.4 billion through the current tax amnesty program. According to Caroline Rotich, the Chief Manager of the Domestic Taxes Department at KRA, more than 17,000 taxpayers have requested amnesty, and they’re expected to pay Ksh. 10.5 billion.

KRA has identified 2.8 million taxpayers with fines and interest who qualify for the amnesty. This program began on September 1, 2023, and KRA plans to collect around Ksh. 51 billion in outstanding debts during this period.

“More than 17,000 tax payers have applied for amnesty and we expect the number to immensely grow as we continue to create awareness among tax payers,” said chief manager domestic taxes Caroline Rotich.

The goal of the tax amnesty program is to relieve people who owe money in fines and interest. One significant finding is that, of Kenya’s roughly 7.0 million taxpayers, an astounding 2.8 million, or 40%, have fines and interest that qualify them for amnesty.

It is anticipated that the money raised by the amnesty would have a significant effect, supporting vital initiatives and helping to improve the government’s financial position. The program’s accomplishments also highlight the value of specific regulations intended to promote tax compliance and a responsible financial culture.
