The price of tea rises slightly in Mombasa auction week despite its demand lowering.

This week I kg of tea sold at USD 2.32 (ksh280.49) from 2.27USD (274.80) last week.

Due to the low demand, total auction volumes decreased by 553,505 kilos compared to the previous week.

Edward Mudibo, managing director of the East African Tea Trade Association (EATTA), said that Pakistan Packers, Bazaar, Yemen, and other Middle Eastern countries, have provided considerable support, with Sudan, Kazakhstan, and other CIS governments expressing increased interest.

Furthermore, although Egyptian Packers were active at lower levels, Afghanistan was selective.

“Russia, Iran, and Local Packers maintained support. There was more interest from Somalia at the lower end of the market.”
