A multimillion-shilling contract farming program has been announced by East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL), which is anticipated to help roughly 1,000 farmers in lower Murang’a County.

Sorghum will be planted by the farmers under a contract, and the brewer will purchase it from them for an agreed-upon price of Sh48 per kilo.

The contract is aimed at people of lower Murang’a who lack a consistent source of income and a solid cash crop. In order to produce high-quality sorghum, the farmers will receive training in optimal farming practices, according to Eric Kiniti, Group Corporate Relations Director at EABL.

He added that in addition to receiving technical support from extension staff on their farms, the farmers will receive planting seeds and agricultural materials to help them get started in farming.

“This deal will bring a new lease to the residents of lower Murang’a as it will give them an alternative source of income,” Kinitu said.

He clarified that this is a component of the “iko pesa kwa sorghum” initiative, which has been implemented throughout the nation and allows farmers to grow sorghum that the business purchases.

The county government will also provide the farmers with planting materials for the boma rhodes hay they will be selling to the dairy producers as part of a parallel initiative.
