Bungoma County government approved the construction of a modern market for Sh272 million that can house 4,000 vendors.

The Kimilili sub-county market at Kamukuywa will have stalls, a banking hall, offices, restrooms, outdoor shop space, paved driveways, and a nursery.

Once completed, the market will be a respite for vendors who currently conduct business on unclean, dusty grounds alongside the bustling Kitale-Webuye highway.

The market’s perimeter wall and floodlights will protect the security of the vendors and the goods they sell.

Governor Kenneth Lusaka stated the initiative was his administration’s strategy to expand the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) sector while speaking at the groundbreaking event.

“The project will significantly improve the business environment at Kamukuywa which sits on a Webuye-Kitale highway,” he stated.

According to Lusaka, the project will be a significant accelerator for economic growth, revenue, investments, and better living conditions.

“We made a promise to upgrade open-air markets across the county, spur trading activities and create an enabling environment for traders to thrive,” the governor stated.

Didmus Barasa, the MP for Kimilili, as well as other County Executive Committee members, key officials, numerous MCAs, and local authorities, were present.
