British American Tobacco, a cigarette producer, has launched an avocado planting program to secure the financial and nutritional security of its growers across the country.

According to the company, this is motivated by national agricultural patterns that indicate that avocado sales can generate a profit.

Nearly 16,000 seedlings have been distributed thus far in four counties: Migori, Homa Bay, Bungoma, and Busia.

“We believe that crop diversification can help mitigate agricultural economic risk by reducing farmers’ dependency on tobacco as a single source of income”, said Mimi Mavuti, BAT head of business and communications.

In order to achieve greater yields, the company will also offer its farmers technical assistance and capacity-building in sustainable agricultural methods.

By ensuring that its farmers conduct effective and climate-friendly farming, the cigarette company hopes to reverse the negative impacts of global warming.
