Senior Ministry of Sports officials are expected to be grilled by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over their role in the recently concluded World Athletes Championships in Oregon, US.

The officials whose names would not be published to allow investigations to be completed are said to have travelled to the athletics fete at the expense of several deserving athletes missing out.

The DCI is now in possession of the full list of individuals who travelled after procuring US visas as well as those who applied but did not get the documents.

Investigators are said to have already established all the persons in the entourage to Oregon were fully catered for by the government and are now seeking to establish the reasons behind the payments made and the roles each played.

Sources at police headquarters said that investigators have lined up several senior Sports Ministry Officials for questioning after they travelled to the US for the games, despite having no role to play.

Some Ministry officials are said to have been accompanied by their relatives.

“So far we have received the full list of individuals who acquired visas and travelled to the US, which we have now scheduled to summon for interrogation to establish their role in the games in Oregon,” said a senior police officer privy to the investigations.

Though initial reports had indicated that around 32 officials from the Ministry, Sports Kenya and Athletics Kenya travelled to Oregon as joyriders, the number is said to have been more. The Ministry alone is said to have produced at least 15 persons.

Sources said most of the persons included in the trip had nothing to do with the athletics competition.

To add insult to injury, most of the persons whom the detectives have lined up for questioning, are currently in Birmingham, UK for the Commonwealth Games where they travelled before the dust settled on the Oregon scandal.

In almost all the correspondences related to the Oregon games, a senior official at the Sports Ministry had indicated that all the travel and accommodation expenses to be catered for by the Ministry.
