Since September last year, a total of 583 staff members have been laid off by retail Chain, Choppies Supermarket, as it struggles to remain afloat in the highly competitive supermarket business.

The Union is in court seeking to have the retailer settle all the affected staff’s dues before it completely exits the Kenyan market. According to the staff, Choppies owes them a total of KSh12.5 million in terminal dues.

According to court documents filed by the Kenya Union of Commercial Food and Allied Workers, the retail chain fired 486 employees on redundancy claims on 15th November 2019. On 31st October 2019, an additional 51 employees were affected by the same redundancy in Nanyuki.

Furthermore, 46 staff members left employment due to undisclosed reasons.
