The prices of direct flights from Kisumu and Eldoret to Mombasa hit a high of Ksh 15,100 per ticket. There has been a surge in demand since the recent lockdown was put in place. The lockdown saw movement in and out of Nairobi and four additional counties halted to curb the spread of the virus.

Before the lockdown, Jambojet charged Ksh 8,000 for a ticket on the Mombasa and Western Kenya direct flights. The lockdown caused an increased number of passengers resulting in the number of flights being increased to 11.

“We have maintained the flights that we had added on the route during Easter because the demand is still there,” said the airline.

Under normal circumstances, prices of tickets tend to rise over the weekend when there is a high demand for flying. Now that road and railway travel is banned too and from Nairobi which is usually the middle point of most flights, passengers are now opting for direct flights. Therefore, the flights become more expensive.

“We see that people used to connect via Nairobi and are now flying direct because of restrictions of movement in and out of Nairobi keeping the demand of these routes”, the Airline added.
