Solar-powered tablets, also known as “solar media,” have been brought to remote areas of Kenya owing to cooperation between a Chinese solar manufacturer and a Kenyan company.

By giving marginalised groups access to information and vocational training, the tablets assist those communities to improve their standard of living.

Since the project’s beginning in September 2022, 106 pieces of equipment have been distributed in two phases to more than 200 people in the southern Kenyan village of Nthunguni.

Caleb Kioko, a student who acquired skills through the “solar media”-based Kenswed vocational training program, is one of the beneficiaries.

He claimed that the tablets have given him and his community new opportunities.

The “solar media” devices made available by a Shenzhen-based firm in the Guangdong Province in south China have preloaded content in the fields of education, agriculture, health, and skill development.

In November 2023, the third phase will be put into action, and 200 pieces of equipment are anticipated to be distributed to other regions.

More than 3,000 people are anticipated to gain from the project this year, and the organisers plan to engage with more partners by 2024 and 2025 so that more Kenyan farmers can benefit.
