Bamburi Cement Plc has launched a regional construction sector thought leadership series that will push the industry towards decarbonization.

In Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nairobi, the firm will consult alongside manufacturers, engineers, developers, contractors, and industry bodies on how to transition to a low-carbon path.

The built environment contributes around 42 percent of annual worldwide CO2 emissions.

Building operations account for approximately 27% of total emissions, with only four building and infrastructure materials—cement, iron, steel, and aluminum—accounting for an additional 15%.

Bamburi Cement CEO Mohit Kapoor challenged the sector to lead the way in achieving a decarbonized and competitive future in a speech to over 120 sector players in Mombasa.

“The construction process and the materials used contribute heavily to carbon emissions (CO2). We are calling for a sector collaboration and a shift towards sustainable construction which uses greener and more environmentally friendly construction solutions,” Kapoor elaborated.

These collaborations come as local and worldwide pressure mounts on cement and concrete sector participants to take bold measures toward decarbonization and more sustainable building environments.

Bamburi Cement is shifting to low-carbon certified and sustainably produced cement brands, which emit more than 30% less CO2 than conventional Portland cement, in order to provide a greener choice of building materials.

“The choice of building materials is crucial to sustainable construction. Today, most of our line of certified and sustainably produced cement brands have more than 30% lower CO2 emissions as compared to the Ordinary Portland Cement or CEM I cement. Our flagship product is Duracem 42.5 cement with a massive CO2 reduction of 64%.”
