Nairobi County Government is staring a financial crisis and stands a chance to lose up to Sh100 million daily should there not be another service provider for the ICMS.

City Hall plans to charge parking fees in more Nairobi estates in order to achieve its revenue target.

Nairobi Finance and Economic Planning CEC, Allan Igambi, announced that the decision was made in order for City Hall to meet its revenue target of Ksh.19.8 billion against a budget of Ksh.39.63 billion for the fiscal year starting July.

Daily parking fees collected Ksh.1.5 billion in the financial year ended June last year, failing to reach the set target of Ksh.2.8 billion.

In order to rectify this, the new parking fee in estates is implemented in order to collect Ksh.3.01 billion in the new financial year starting July.

“We plan to gazette more parking areas and introduce zonal charging of the parking bays to increase revenue from parking fees,” said Igambi.

City Hall’s move to increase more parking areas and charges will be based on locations and estates.

Currently, City Hall has divided Nairobi into three zones and each is charged differently.

In Zone I, which consists of the Central Business District (CBD) and Kijabe Street, motorists will be charged Ksh.400 as a daily parking fee, up from Ksh.200.

Zone II includes Community, Westlands, Upper Hill, Ngara, Industrial Area, Highridge, Kilimani, Gigiri, Yaya Centre, Mwiki, Allsops, Dagoretti, Kangemi, Kawangware, South B, South C, Nairobi West, Lang’ata, Muthaiga, Madaraka, Buruburu, Makadara, Kayole, Umoja, Donholm, Embakasi, Hurlingham, Milimani, Karen, Lavington, and Eastleigh.

These areas will be charged Ksh.200 daily parking fees. Zone III is made up of all other commercial centers excluding those in Zones I and II and motorists will be required to pay Ksh.100.
