About 1.7 Million Kenyan taxpayers are yet to file their annual returns ahead of June 30th’s deadline.

According to Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) data, by June 20th, 3.82 Million Kenyans of the targeted 5.5 taxpayers had filed tax returns.

KRA has been processing 80,00-100,00 filings daily, a number that is set to rise to 300,000 with the deadline fast approaching.

Failure to meet the deadline equals a fine of Sh 10,000 for Salaried workers, Sh 5,000 for SME’s subject to turnover tax, and Sh 20,000 to other business incomes.

According to KRA’s manager for taxpayer services, Wanja Wang’odu, 3.82 Million citizens had filed their tax returns by June 20 compared to last year’s 3.14 Million by the same time.

The KRA’s contact center will be open from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm Monday to Friday and from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on weekends.

The iTax support centers will, however, be open from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Friday and 8:00 am to 1:00 pm on weekends.

Under the Tax procedure Act of 2015, KRA has the authority to order employees to deduct the penalties and tax dues from workers’ salaries.
