Kenya Railways has stated that it will increase the number of commuter trains between the inter-stations in a bid to greatly reduce the traffic congestion along Mombasa Road, Nairobi.

This comes after the traffic in the busy highway pushed numbers of passengers to opt for the trains. According to the Kenya Railways Managing Director, Philip Maingi, the corporation has registered increased demand for trains owing to the ongoing construction of the Nairobi Expressway that has disrupted
transport services along the route.

In his statement, Maingi noted that despite having high capacity trains, the demand was still very high to an extent that some passengers have to stand for lack of seats.

”Traffic has been a great issue for passengers using Mombasa Road. Starting next week, we will increase the number of commuter trains to help ease the situation,” the MD explained.

Mr Maingi added that that the coaches are scarce and fill up within minutes or docking at the inter-stations thus the need for the corporation to add more trains on the route during the peak hours.

“We will increase the number of coaches to and from the Athi River station and all inter-stations along that route. When we talk of a train with 20 coaches, we are talking of a trip of 1,000 people. That is a big number. We will also have an additional DMU to Nairobi central,” he said.

The MD also promised to review the fares charged with passengers paying a 50percent low of peak hours to fare in off-peak hours.
