Public transport operators to resume carrying full capacity from Monday to cushion the sector from massive losses after they were initially ordered to carry a certain number of passengers to help in curbing the Covid-19 pandemic. Earlier on 14 seater matatus were allowed to carry just 8 excluding the driver and his conductor.

Ministry of Transport in a press release on Friday, August 6, through Cabinet Administrative Secretary (CAS) Chris Obure, have stated they will resume pre-Covid operation modes and Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) will be allowed to carry normally.

This was after a successful meeting between the Ministry of Transport and Matatu Saccos in the country where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed for the latter to self regulate.

In the meeting, the matatu operators revealed that they had lost close to Ksh31 billion since the order was made in March 2020 by President Uhuru Kenyatta. At the time the country was racing against time to curb the spread of the disease that brought deaths to many.
