Naivas Reports Attack on Its System by Hackers

On Sunday, giant retailer Naivas said that it had been the target of a ransomware attack by an online criminal organization.

Willy Kimani, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement that the company is aware of the situation and that all of its systems are up and running again.

On becoming aware of the attack, Naivas took immediate steps to prevent external access and engaged leading cybersecurity experts crowd strike to ensure system integrity “read the statement, adding that the company is cooperating with relevant law enforcement agencies and Office of the Data Protection Commissioner to investigate and bring the perpetrators to book.

The company, which remained mum about the scope and nature of the attack, said that it does not store credit card or debit card information on its systems and that it is not aware of any malicious use of the information that was stolen by the hackers.

It also advised its customers to be on the lookout for any phishing attempts via phone or SMS.

“It is recommended in the face of this type of situation to pay particular attention to any phishing attempts by phone, SMS or email as well as to the sufficient security passwords “added the statement.

The Kenyan constitution prohibits unauthorized access to and use of data, as stated in the data protection legislation.
