At a time when the price of the commodity is at its highest, a ship transporting bulk white maize is anticipated to arrive at the Port of Mombasa.

The cargo will be arriving in the coastal town of Kenya from Matola Port in Mozambique today.

Kenya is presently dealing with expensive prices for basic foods like maize flour, which is a national staple.

Despite a lack of maize availability, high prices are attributed to increased demand for the commodities.

A protracted drought that has affected the nation’s corn-producing areas is the cause of the current maize shortage.

The price of a two-kilogram packet of maize flour has increased from its prior low of about Sh100 to between Sh190 and Sh200.

However, the supply network will be strengthened by the commodity’s arrival, which will help drive down the commodity’s price.

Bulk wheat will once again be delivered to the harbor.

Just last month, Ukraine donated 30,000 metric tonnes of wheat to the nation to aid famine and drought-stricken households.

The donation is a part of the humanitarian “Grain from Ukraine” (GfU) initiative started by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

With financial help from the governments of the United Kingdom, Norway, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic, the shipment was made possible by the UN World Food Program (WFP).

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, between March and June of this year, over 5.4 million people in Kenya are expected to suffer acute food insecurity.

In 2023, there will certainly be 970,200 children who are acutely malnourished.
