In Nairobi, the electric bus startup BasiGo will introduce 15 more electric buses at a time when Kenyans are becoming increasingly interested in adopting a clean transportation system due to issues with climate change.

The startup declared that various routes will be served by the soon-to-be-unveiled buses.

Kenya, like many other nations, is struggling with unpredictable weather patterns brought on by brief rainy seasons and protracted dry spells, which have an impact on the agricultural sector, the foundation of the nation’s economy.

“Kenya are we ready? 15 electric buses will be coming to our roads soon. Look out for these state-of-the-art electric buses on your route,” the firm said on its LinkedIn page.

BasiGo only recently raised Sh804.5 million ($6.6 million) from foreign investors to construct further electric buses and charging stations.

It was spearheaded by Mobility54, the corporate venture capital branch of Toyota Tsusho, Trucks VC, a venture capital fund in Silicon Valley that focuses on the transportation sector, and Novastar Ventures, a global VC that supports businesspeople reshaping African markets.

Along with Moxxie Ventures, My Climate Journey (MCJ), the Susquehanna Foundation, Keiki Capital, and OnCapital participated in the investment round.

Through the business’s innovative Pay-As-You-Drive financing mechanism, the extra capital infusion will allow the company to start commercial delivery of locally produced electric buses and charging infrastructure.

The first electric passenger bus in the nation was introduced by the electric mobility firm in March 2022, changing the transportation sector.
