Avocado Exports Suspended Indefinitely in Kenya

The Agriculture and Food Authority has banned avocado exports indefinitely (AFA) after reports of premature exports emerged.

The move seeks to safeguard quality after middle men began putting pressure on farmers to harvest premature fruit, encouraged by the huge benefits reaped from the Chinese market this, according to the Horticultural Crops Directorate.

These restrictions are enforced to ensure that quality products are produced and marketed.

Harvesting and export of immature avocado has negatively affected Kenyan image in overseas markets.

This unfortunately comes as a big blow to the farmers, seeing as in recent events, the tariff on Kenya’s avocado exports have been slashed to 7% from 30% by China, a move that was likely to see farmers hugely benefit from the trade.
