Carrefour, the French supermarket chain, will open a new store at the Business Bay Square Mall in Eastleigh, Nairobi, on Wednesday as part of its expansion into the Kenyan market.

The retail franchise, which is owned by Dubai-based Majid Al Futtaim, had 19 locations as of December 2022.

The new store is aimed at the large number of people who visit Eastleigh to shop for clothes and household items.

It will also serve those living in the busy area and adjacent estates.

“As part of its strategic plan to expand its footprint in the Kenyan Market, Carrefour, owned and operated by Majid Al Futtaim in Kenya, will [on the] 31st May 2023 open its doors to its 20th store at the new Business Bay Square Mall in Eastleigh,” reads the company media invite.

In 2016, Carrefour opened its first location in Kenya; as of now, it has 20.

It has been rapidly expanding its online shopping division in Kenya, capitalizing on the growth of e-commerce, which it views as a positive development.

The majority of Nairobi’s international retailers can be found in the Hub, Garden City, Two Rivers, Southfield Mall, Thika Road Mall (TRM), Sarit, Nairobi Mega Mall, Village Market, Next Gen Mall, and Galleria Mall, which are all suburban shopping centers.

After opening its 19th location at the Comet House on Monrovia Street, the retail store ended its absence from the city’s business district and began targeting customers who worked there.

In March, the retail establishment installed a self-service checkout in its Westgate Mall, enabling customers to browse and make purchases without the aid of cashiers.

Naivas and Quickmart face fierce competition from Carrefour, especially in Nairobi where the French retail chain has a concentration of stores.
