Tushop, a social commerce startup that sells and delivers groceries in Nairobi has secured $3 million funding to expand to other parts of the country. The start up enables communities to acquire groceries cheaply with free delivery,

The company aims to make it affordable and convenient for Kenyans to acquire groceries through community group buying which saves consumers up to 60% on groceries compared to when buying from supermarkets, kiosks or roadside vendors.

Investors in the startup include 4DX Ventures, JAM Fund, Breyer Capital, Chandaria Capital, TO Ventures, Golden Palm Investments, FirstCheck Africa, DFS Lab and Wasoko.

CEO and founder of Tushop, Cathay Chepkemboi welcomed the investors on board stating that they look forward to scaling up their operations.

“We are stoked to be working with some of the leading investors globally and locally who really understand the African space from a logistics, tech and payments perspective and look forward to justifying their faith in us with future growth, commercial success and meaningful social impact,” said Chepkemboi.

The funds will be deployed to grow Tushop’s team, invest in the tech platform and expand the services in Nairobi and other parts of the country.

“Tushop is unique in this market because we know the customer – we are our own customers. We have grown up experiencing this problem of unaffordable food on the one hand and the need to have additional side hustles on the other because of persistently low incomes,” said Chepkemboi.

Managing partner at 4DX, Peter Orth, said the market opportunity for Tushop was incredibly large and lauded Chepkemboi for her impressive execution and growth so far.

“We’re thrilled to join such a strong team of other investors and advisors to help Tishop become the dominant player in group-buying across Africa,” he said.

CEO of Wasoko, Daniek Yu, also congratulated the Tushop’s leadership and team that he said, embodies a true understanding of their consumers.

“We are excited to work with a team that shares our vision of affordability and equitable distribution of goods across Africa,” he said.
