Carrefour Opens Eighth Store Along Uhuru Highway, Nairobi

French retailer Carrefour on Thursday, June 11, 2020, officially opened its eighth store in Nairobi, at the Mega Shopping Mall along Uhuru Highway.

The retailer which is operated by Majid Al Futtaim in Kenya took over the space owned by Car & General as an anchor tenant following the collapse of Nakumatt which had occupied the space.

The new two-floored store will stock over 39,000 food and non-food items, jewelry, home décor, a library, bistro area, and a milk ATM – a fresh milk dispensing machine that offers customers an alternative to prepackaged milk.

These offerings will supplement the conventional fresh produce, groceries, fresh bakery, and roastery sections that Carrefour customers are accustomed to.

Additionally, the new store will create jobs for 250 Kenyan employees and over 200 part-time workers.

In a statement, the company said that more than 99 percent of the stock in the new store will be sourced locally, ensuring that the revenue contribution to the local community’s supply chain.

“The new store will also enable Carrefour customers to enjoy home delivery services in the region, making it convenient to shop online during the ongoing circumstances,” said Franck Moreau, Country Manager of Carrefour Kenya at Majid Al Futtaim Retail.

The new store has a sales area of more than 7,000 square meters, a 1.8-meter aisle width and 36 checkout counters, among other features.

The new branch is convenient to the residents of Upper Hill, Madaraka, South B, South C and those who live along Mombasa road.

Carrefour Kenya’s revenues in the year ending December 2019 went up to Sh18.2 billion compared to Sh17.7 billion in December 2018, representing a 2.7 percent growth.

The retailer has been expanding by taking over spaces previously occupied by struggling supermarket chains, such as Nakumatt and Uchumi, as well as opening new outlets.

Carrefour other branches include The Hub in Karen, Village Market, Two Rivers Mall and Sarit Centre.
