Technology has made life more convenient in Kenya. But it has also enabled mobile money and online fraudsters to scam unsuspecting citizens.

Here are smart ways to avoid becoming a victim:

Keep PINs and Passwords Private

Never share your mobile money PIN, bank card PIN, or online account passwords publicly or with callers/texters requesting them.

Beware of Phishing Links

Don’t click suspicious links in emails or texts that can install malware giving scammers access or trick you into entering passwords.

Verify Senders

Confirm any calls, emails, or texts requesting personal information or money are from legitimate known sources and not scammers spoofing identities.

Avoid Mobile Apps from Unknown Sources

Only download apps from official app stores like Google Play. Other sites may distribute fake apps embedded with viruses and malware.

Review Privacy Settings

Limit sharing personal and financial information widely on social media where fraudsters can harvest data about you for scamming.

Keep Software Updated

Update your device operating systems, antivirus software, and apps regularly to get critical security patches protecting you.

Check Account Statements

Review financial statements frequently to identify any unauthorized, fraudulent transactions so you can report issues promptly.

Report Scams and Fraud

If you encounter online fraud, or phishing attempts, or fall victim, report it to authorities like banks, cybercrime units, and telecom regulators immediately.

Stay Vigilant About Scams

Keep informed on the latest mobile money and online fraud tactics so you can identify risks before losing funds.

With awareness and caution, Kenyans can avoid the majority of technology-enabled scams. Report issues when they occur and proactively take preventative measures for your safety.
