Sunday 23rd, 2021, Safaricom PLC launched the Safaricom Golf Tour in a move to make golf more accessible to the youth. Young golfers from across the country will be identified and given a chance to develop their skills as they become the next generation of pro-golfers as well as earn from their passion for the sport.

In line with the ambition to be the biggest support of communities, the telco giant has raised 100 million shillings in partnership with Junior Golf Foundation, Kenya Golf Union, and the National Caddies Association.

The raised amount will majorly be used to support golf clinics and training for young people who have a passion for the sport but lack the resources to embark on it.

“We will have 14 regional tournaments as part of the tour with each of them featuring a corporate event, junior golf contest, and a caddies challenge in addition to the clinics and outreach programs. We felt it was important to include the caddies who are an integral part of the game and deserve to be recognized,” said Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa in a LinkedIn post.

The tour will consist of 4 tournaments and the top two winners from each event will qualify for grand national finals in Vipingo. The tournaments include;

Corporate Day – This is open for all registered members of the participating clubs. Winners from each event will proceed to the grand finale in Vipingo for the grand prize.

Junior Golf Day – Open for all members of the Junior Golf Foundation. Winners from each event will proceed to the grand finale in Vipingo for the grand prize.

Caddies Golf Day – Open for all Members of the National Caddies Association. Winners from each event will proceed to the grand finale in Vipingo for the grand prize.

Golf Clinics – Golf clinics will target students between the ages of 6 to 18 years old from schools around the golf clubs marked for the tour. This will be a fun day intended to introduce juniors to golf and ultimately scout and identify at least 30 juniors who will be trained at the club for 8 months.

The tour is set to take place in Golf Park, Nanyuki Sports Club, Limuru Golf Club, Muthaiga Golf Club, Nyanza Golf Club, Nyali, Karen Country Club, Machakos Sports Club, Kericho Club, Kitale Club, Royal Nairobi, Nakuru Golf Club, Kenya Airforce, Vet Labs, and Vipingo Ridge.
