The treasury has set aside 12.7 billion to settle debts with millers who supplied maize under the 2017 subsidiary. The money will also settle penalties resulting from a breach of contract. This money is inclusive of pending bills and accumulated interest.
“The current expenditure reflects an increase of sh.11.7 billion consisting of additional sh.12.7 billion for settlement of pending bills under the maize subsidiary program and outstanding legal claim for breach of contract and a reduction of sh. 1 billion on account of rationalization of budget and excess provision for salaries,” read the supplementary budget on the allocation for the state Department for crop development and agricultural research.
Millers were forced to go to court in 2019 following the decline of payment by the Ministry of Agriculture. The government is facing grievances from the rest of the processors after paying 3 billion shillings to only 5 millers. Agriculture PS Hamadi Boga said they were waiting for funds.
