Safaricom users can keep their lines operational for up to two years without toping them up.

This comes after the telco introduced the Daima service, which would offer packages ranging from six months to two years, letting consumers to keep their lines operational even when they are not using them.

The service addresses inactive lines for clients who may be traveling or living abroad for extended periods of time, attending school, or undergoing police and army training.

Other clients deal with a change in ownership of a line due to losing a loved one, while others are inactive due to a car monitoring service or have many lines that they want to keep active.

A subscriber must have utilized a provider’s service during the past 90 days to be considered active, according to the country’s telecommunications legislation.

Telecommunications companies must renew inactive client lines.

“We are yet again innovating around our customers’ needs by introducing solutions such as Daima that are modeled around the lifestyles of our customers,” said Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom CEO.

Daima will provide three packages, starting at Sh200 for six months, Sh500 for a year, and Sh1,000 for two years.

Every month, each option will provide 20 minutes of calling time and 20 SMS across all networks.

Customers can access Daima in the coming weeks by dialing *100*4# and selecting the Daima option, as well as through the MySafaricom App.

The new service comes just two weeks after the Communication Authority of Kenya disconnected unregistered connections, causing carriers to lose some subscribers.

As of October 13, Safaricom has the most registered clients (38 million, or 91%), followed by Airtel (13.4 million, or 48%) and Telkom Kenya (1.8 million) (40 percent).
