The newest financial obstacle facing music streaming company Mdundo is a Sh31.5 million copyright infringement claim that was submitted during the financial year 2022/23.

While the corporation withheld information about the claimant and the song or songs in question, it did indicate the claim was submitted in Kenya by denoting the claim amount in Kenyan shillings.

Mdundo, though, is confident that it will prevail in the case. The company recently said that more than 140,000 musicians have registered on the streaming service, with 86,000 of them from Kenya, or 61.4 percent of the total.

“Mdundo been demanded payment of Sh31,553,500, equivalent to DKK [Danish Krone] 1,539,175 as of June 30, 2023, for alleged copyright infringement. However, based on a legal assessment, it is considered highly likely that the court will acquit Mdundo of the allegation,” said the firm.

This occurs as the business widens its net loss by 5.4 percent during the quarter, extending its losing streak to the end of June 2023.
