DPP Drops Fraud Prosecution against Former Kenya Power CEO Ben Chumo

The Director of Public Prosecution, Noordin Haji has dropped charges against Ben Chumo, the former KPLC boss, and ten others.

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company boss and his colleagues had been charged with conspiracy to commit an offense, aiding the commission of a felony, willful failure to comply with procurement laws, conspiracy to defeat justice, and fraudulent acquisition of public property.

Ben Chumo and his colleagues were accused of providing 400m faulty transformers in 2018. Charged alongside him were Ken Tarus, Beatrice Meso, K.P Mungai, Joshua Mutua, Abubakar Swaleh, Samuel Ndirangu, Stanley Mutwiri, Benson Muriithi, Peter Mwicigi, and John Ombui.

The directors of Muwa Trading Company ltd were also charged with supplying faulty transformers. This case against James Njenga Mungai, Grace Wanjira Mungai, and John Mungia were withdrawn last year.
