Property developers in the country are now encouraging potential homeowners to embrace green building technologies in their housing schemes. Optiven Group CEO George Wachiuri says the concept seeks to reduce energy costs while protecting the environment.

Many Kenyans are taking up construction across the country away from the bustle of cities and major towns. However, this is being upped by the desire to go green as a measure of conservation and promoting green buildings. This is not the conventional construction home set up, real estate firm Optiven is encouraging home builders to go green in constructing their homes.

Prospective homeowners settle for structures that can tap renewable energy like solar, harvest rain water to successfully run their homes and protect the environment by providing green cover.

“Our designs are green compliant in terms of the way we design this particular home, the size of windows, the natural lighting and we are happy to say that customers are now accommodating this type of designs. We are also encouraging within your property 50 by 100 or 100 by 100 to plant your own trees and fruits,” said CEO Optiven Limited George Wachiuri.

Occupants who have adopted the green building technologies for their housing schemes have benefited from reduced energy costs and deficiency in resources such as water.

“Once one has purchased and had their title deed then they can be able to select a design and build their own homes. As you are aware most Kenyans prefer building their own housing because they are bale to do it at their own pace and are able to recycle 70% of the water that is used in your own development. It is very interesting and I encourage people out there, you will be able to pick this particular agenda and change our city and change our counties,” added Wachiuri.

The green agenda gels well with the government initiative of planting 2 billion trees by 2022. The move seeks to increase the country’s forest cover from the current 6 per cent to 10 per cent by the end of the set target. Denmark, Israel, Sweden, Finland and the U.S.A are the five countries globally leading in green technologies. Locally, KCB Group got a shot in the arm after it was accredited to access a green climate fund for onward lending to green projects in the region.
