Since the government is beginning to phase out business courses in favour of STEM programs, technical colleges have begun cancelling admission letters for students who had been chosen to study business courses this year.

The school has withdrawn admission letters for students who had applied for business courses in the January 2023 intake, according to a letter from Nyeri National Technical Polytechnic to students dated December 30, 2022.

Although the university currently intends to switch to STEM courses in accordance with the Ministry of Education regulation, students are recommended to choose any other course of their choice that is provided by the institution.

“Following the directive from the Ministry of Education regarding phasing out of business courses in Tvet institutions, the polytechnic regrets to inform you that your admission letter for January 2023 intake has been revoked,” said Nyeri National Polytechnic in a letter to learners.

“However, application for the January 2023 intake is still ongoing and you can apply for any other course.”

However, private middle-level schools that are now having trouble with their financial flows are expected to benefit from the instruction to suspend business courses in technical and vocational education and training (Tvet) institutions.

The action comes just a few weeks after the government struck a significant agreement with Germany, which contributed Sh20 billion to aid Kenya’s agricultural, TVE, youth, climate, and energy sectors.

The help is a component of the agreement that the two governments inked in early December, according to German Ambassador Sebastian Groth.

Mr Groth said there are ongoing negotiations for the next two years’ development programme between Germany and Kenya that will see the latter export skilled labour to the former and to other European countries.
